By the Kashi Ghoomo team, Prahlad Ghat, Varanasi
Picture this. You step out of Varanasi Junction at 6 a.m. A man smiles and offers a “full Kashi package.” You pay on the spot. Two days later, your hotel is far from the ghats, and the boat never shows up.
It happens more than it should. Search for the best travel agency in Varanasi and you will find dozens of agencies calling themselves the best. Everyone says it. So how do you tell who means it?
This guide gives you a simple checklist. We run a Varanasi agency ourselves, so at the end we will also tell you how we measure up.
Why Varanasi Needs a Local Agency
Varanasi is not a city you can wing. The lanes are narrow, and cars can’t enter many of them. Temple darshan has its own timing. Evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat draws huge crowds, and boats fill up fast.
A local agency knows these things by heart. It knows which hotel is a five-minute walk from the ghat and which one only says “near the ghat” on a website. That gap can ruin a trip.
The 7 Checks
1. Ask for registration papers
A real business has papers. Look for a GST certificate, a shop or trade license, or a Udyam registration. Some travel portals, like Holidify, check documents like these before they mark an agent “verified.” You can ask any agency for the same proof. A real one won’t mind.
2. Read reviews the smart way
Don’t stop at the five-star ones. Check Google reviews and see how many there are. Is the latest review from this month or three years ago? Read the three-star comments too. They show what goes wrong and how the agency replies.
3. Get the plan in writing
Ask for a day-by-day plan on WhatsApp or email. It should list what is included (cab, hotel, breakfast, boat) and what is not (lunch, entry tickets, tips). If the agent keeps saying “everything is included” but won’t write it down, walk away.
4. Ask for names, not just promises
Which hotel? Which car, a Dzire, an Ertiga or an Innova? How far is the hotel from the ghat? Real agencies answer fast. Vague agencies say “good hotel, don’t worry.”
5. Know the refund rules first
Plans change. A flight gets cancelled. Someone falls sick. Ask what happens if you cancel 30 days out, 15 days out, or on the day. Get the answer in writing, because rules differ a lot from one agent to another.
6. Check for a real office and phone
Can you find an address? Does someone answer the call? Any agency you pick should be easy to find and easy to reach. You want someone you can visit if things go wrong.
7. Test their local knowledge
Ask a simple question: “Where is the morning aarti?” A true local says Assi Ghat, known as Subah-e-Banaras. Ask where the big evening aarti happens. The answer is Dashashwamedh Ghat. If the agent hesitates, you learned something.
Red Flags
Pressure to pay the full amount today
No written itinerary
Payment only to a personal account, with no business name
Photos that look copied from other websites
No reply once you have paid
Trips a Good Agency Should Handle
Most visitors pick one of these routes. Ask your agency to explain the driving time for each.
Kashi in 2 nights, 3 days: Ganga Aarti, Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath and Assi Ghat. See our Kashi Vishwanath tour package.
Kashi plus Ayodhya: The drive takes around four hours. See our Ayodhya tour package.
Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya in 3 nights, 4 days: This covers Triveni Sangam and Ram Mandir. Read about the Varanasi Ayodhya Prayagraj package.
Kashi plus Gaya: Around five to six hours by road, popular for Pind Daan.
Boats and Dev Deepawali
Boat rides sell out first, especially on Dev Deepawali. It falls on the full-moon night of Kartik, usually in November. Thousands of lamps light the ghats, and boats get booked weeks ahead.
A good agency tells you the boat type (motor boat or bajra), the timing, and the pickup point. You can compare options on our boat rides page or book a Dev Diwali boat ride.
Portal or Local Agency?
Portals like Holidify let you compare quotes from up to three agents. That helps you see the market. But when something breaks at 9 p.m. in a Varanasi lane, you want a local person on the phone, not a support ticket.
Many travelers do both. They compare on a portal, then talk directly to one or two local agents.
How We Work at Kashi Ghoomo
Full disclosure: we wrote this guide, so judge us by the same seven checks. We don’t call ourselves the best travel agency in Varanasi because a blog says so. We ask you to test us.
We have worked in Varanasi since 2018. We offer hotel stays, boat rides and pilgrimage packages.
Do we want you to ask hard questions? Yes. An agency that fears questions isn’t worth your money.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know a travel agency in Varanasi is genuine?
Ask for GST, trade license or Udyam papers. Check recent Google reviews and confirm a real office address and working phone number.
Is it safer to book online or in person?
Both work if you get everything in writing. Never pay a stranger who gives no business name or papers.
Who is the best travel agency in Varanasi for families?
Pick the one that gives you hotel names, car type and refund rules in writing. Then ask for reviews from other families.
How early should I book for Dev Deepawali?
As early as you can. Boats and hotels near the ghats fill up weeks ahead.
How many days do I need for Varanasi?
Two nights and three days cover the ghats, Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath and both aartis. Add a day or two for Ayodhya or Prayagraj.
What should a Varanasi tour package include?
At minimum: hotel, cab, breakfast, a boat ride and temple help. Ask for the full list in writing, along with what is not included.
